Leadership & Management
The first of NASPAA's core competencies, this requirement encompasses the ability to lead and manage in the public interest.

For Leadership and Management, I picked an essay I did for Managing Public Organizations and a presentation I completed for Administrative Ethics. The essay addresses government leadership, while the presentation is more focused on nonprofit management.
The Importance of Constitutionalism in Public Organizations
Managing Public Organizations (Spring 2023)
A final examination paper reflecting on the ways the Constitution has historically acted as a guiding light to public administration and its executors, and how it remains foundational in implementing the rules, regulations, and services that make up government. This paper goes into the importance of good leadership in stewarding public organizations and institutions. Lastly, this paper goes into detail as to what can happen if constitutionalism is discarded by federal leadership, citing President Trump's criminalization of asylum seekers, the proliferation of conspiracy theories regarding the 'Deep State,' and the Flint, Michigan water crisis. In this case, poor leadership and not valuing constitutionalism highly has caused a hallowing out of public administration.
Middle Earth: Audit of a Small Non-Profit
Administrative Ethics (Summer 2023)
This presentation gives an organizational overview of a small nonprofit in central New Jersey, Middle Earth. It discusses how lapses in its administrative infrastructure allowed financial embezzlement and makes three recommendations to Middle Earth leadership to instill better ethics and oversight into the organization. In this way, such crimes in the future may be prevented. These are policies that all nonprofits, regardless of size, should consider when building out their regulations and policies.
